President Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday said there is a need to develop the fisheries sector in a substantive and structured manner, stressing the importance of consultation with those working in the industry.
Speaking during a visit to R. Dhuvaafaru, the President said he had listened to concerns raised by fishermen and emphasised that the views of people engaged across the fisheries sector are central to policy development.
He said he has met fishermen, sailors, yellowfin tuna fishermen and fish processors in recent days, adding that discussions are ongoing with the relevant ministry.
“Various parties have met me over the past few days and are working with the ministry. The government is working to bring progress across these areas,” he said.
The President encouraged continued engagement from industry stakeholders, stating that suggestions and proposals would be taken into account.
“I want you to continue sharing ideas and proposals so that the right solutions can be reached. Nothing that is shared will be ignored. I want to ensure this industry grows and continues,” he said.
Muizzu said the government has been working since the start of its term to implement commitments outlined in its manifesto, noting that some initiatives depend on broader economic conditions.
He said several fisheries-related projects are linked to external financing arrangements and are subject to specific procedures. As a result, he said there have been delays in commencing work on some ice plants and fish processing facilities.
The President said these projects are now ready to proceed, adding that the delays were not due to neglect of the fisheries sector.
“I do not want to announce projects without ensuring they can be sustained. The objective is to develop the industry in a meaningful way,” he said.
