Court orders 5-day remand for MP Zakir over fishermen’s protest
Kendhoo Constituency MP Mauroof Zakir, who also serves as Secretary General of the Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen Union, has been released from police custody, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said on Saturday.
MDP Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof said in a post on X that Mauroof was released and is currently receiving treatment in hospital. He also called for the unconditional release of other individuals detained in connection with the fishermen’s protest.
Ahmed Mauroof urged the government to engage in dialogue with fishermen to identify and resolve their concerns, stating that such engagement is the responsibility of the government.
Mauroof Zakir was arrested on Thursday during a protest by fishermen. He was taken to hospital on Saturday, where he underwent an operation.
MDP Parliamentary Group Deputy Leader and Vikaradhoo Constituency MP Hussain Ziyad told Sun that Mauroof underwent surgery following his arrest.
Police said Mauroof was taken to hospital at his own request and that he did not seek medical attention due to any incident that occurred while he was in custody.
The MDP said on Saturday that the law requires a person arrested on suspicion of committing an offence to be produced before a judge within 24 hours to determine remand.
The party has accused the government of detaining four other individuals without presenting them before a court to decide on their remand, which it claims is unconstitutional.
The MDP has also filed a complaint with the International Labour Organization (ILO) regarding the arrest of Mauroof Zakir and several fishermen during the protest.
