President Mohamed Muizzu said on Monday that the government will release MVR 200 million to private companies next week as part of efforts to settle outstanding payments.
Speaking at a press conference at the President's Office, the President said the government is prioritising the settlement of unpaid bills owed to private companies for work carried out during the previous administration.
“Next week will be an important week. MVR 200 million will be released to private companies next week,” he said.
The President said the payments scheduled for next week will cover bills exceeding MVR 1 million. He added that the government is working on a mechanism to clear the remaining outstanding amounts.
On 2 October 2025, the President announced that all outstanding payments to private companies would be settled within five weeks. The deadline for that commitment expired on 6 November 2025, and full settlement has not yet been completed.
The government has previously stated that the total amount owed to private companies is estimated at between MVR 5 billion and MVR 6 billion.
