No disruption to fuel supply, says finance minister
Zameer said arrangements have now been made to facilitate fuel imports from Singapore.
Finance Minister Moosa Zameer has stated that there are no disruptions in fuel supply to the Maldives, while confirming that arrangements have been made to import fuel from Singapore if required.
Zameer made the remarks at a press conference held at the President’s Office as part of a weekly briefing by a ministerial committee formed in response to the Middle East conflict.
He said fuel and gas shipments are continuing as scheduled.
“Fuel shipments are arriving as planned. Gas shipments are also proceeding without any difficulties so far,” Zameer said.
The Maldives currently imports fuel from Oman through the State Trading Organization. The government has stated previously that it is exploring alternative sources for fuel procurement.
Zameer said arrangements have now been made to facilitate fuel imports from Singapore.
“As the conflict escalated, fuel was imported in addition to scheduled shipments through spot purchases. Arrangements are now in place to buy from the spot market and from Singapore. However, we are continuing to import through Oman,” he said.
He added that global oil prices remain under observation and that any changes may become clearer following the weekend.
Zameer said fuel prices may need to be adjusted in line with market conditions. He noted that fuel imports are not limited to STO and that pricing must be aligned with private sector imports.
“If STO does not adjust prices while private parties are importing, those businesses would not remain viable. Therefore, prices must be aligned accordingly,” he said.
