President Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday night said he accepts the outcome of the day’s elections and will take steps in line with the results.

Voting was held for Local Council Elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections, and a referendum on whether Presidential and Parliamentary elections should be held at the same time.

Provisional results show that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) secured mayoral seats in all cities, including Malé. In the referendum, a majority of voters rejected the proposal to combine the elections.

In a post on social media, Muizzu said he respects the outcome of the three votes and congratulated the successful candidates.

“I assure the citizens of the Maldives that the government will undertake the necessary efforts to address matters and align actions with the will of the people,” he said.

Preliminary figures indicate that 72 per cent of voters opposed holding Presidential and Parliamentary elections on the same day, while 28 per cent supported the proposal.

The results remain provisional pending completion of the count.
