Regulator cites limited authority after Adhadhu police raid
During the operation, police seized electronic devices used in the outlet’s work.
The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) said on Tuesday that it does not have the authority to comment on police procedures following the search of the Adhadhu newsroom.
The statement came a day after police searched Adhadhu’s office under a court order as part of a criminal investigation linked to a video documentary containing allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu.
During the operation, police seized electronic devices used in the outlet’s work.
According to the court order, evidence submitted in support of the search warrant included a letter from the Media Commission.
In connection with the same case, the passports of Adhadhu chief executive Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and editor Hassan Mohamed were withheld for three months. Both men have also been instructed to report to police on Wednesday.
The MMBC issued a press release after criticism over its silence on the matter.
The Commission said it is the institution mandated to establish administrative standards intended to promote and maintain press freedom within the legal framework.
However, it said it does not have the authority to determine the standards police must follow when collecting evidence for criminal investigations.
The regulator added that it would continue to fulfil its role in examining complaints and issues related to content published by media organisations, and to take administrative action where required.
The MMBC was formed under the current administration through the merger of the former Maldives Media Council and Broadcasting Commission of Maldives.
