Mohamed Shahuzan, a journalist at Adhadhu, was released on Wednesday after completing a 15-day prison sentence imposed over a question asked during a press conference involving Mohamed Muizzu.
Shahuzan had been sentenced on 12 May after the Criminal Court ruled that he violated a gag order issued in connection with a defamation case involving the President.
The case arose from a question Shahuzan asked during a press conference held at the President’s Office on 11 May.
According to the court ruling, the question breached the restrictions imposed under the gag order, leading the court to find him guilty of contempt of court.
The matter was submitted to the court through a letter from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
In its ruling, the Criminal Court sentenced Shahuzan to 15 days in prison and imposed a fine of MVR 25,800.
He served the sentence at Maafushi Prison and was released from Hulhumalé Prison after completing the term.
Family members and fellow journalists gathered outside the prison to receive him upon release.
On the same day Shahuzan was sentenced, fellow Adhadhu journalist Leevan Ali Nasir was also sentenced to prison for violating the same court order through a news report published by the outlet.
Leevan received a 10-day sentence and was released last Friday.
