Adhadhu newspaper CEO Hussain Fiyaz Moosa and editor Hassan Mohamed have been summoned to appear before the police Wednesday in relation to a documentary produced by the newspaper.
Police have opened an investigation under the Penal Code concerning the documentary released late last month.
Police carried out a search at the newspaper office under a court order Monday and seized equipment used in the operation of the newspaper.
During the operation, a court order was issued for the seizure of the passports of Fiyaz and Hassan late Monday night.
The summons issued to Fiyaz and Hassan stated that they are required to appear before the police at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The notice refers to their involvement in the publication of a video report under the name “Aisha”, which includes claims regarding President Mohamed Muizzu.
The court order states that police are investigating Fiyaz, Hassan and others in connection with statements made against President Muizzu. Police have referred to Sections 30 and 612 of the Penal Code.
In Scene 5 of the “Aisha” documentary, a woman who states she worked in a role in the office said, without naming herself, that President Muizzu committed sexual assault.
At a press conference held Minday, four weeks after the release of the documentary, Adhadhu newspaper asked President Muizzu about the claims. The President said the claims were false.
The President also called for action against those making false statements. Following this, police started an investigation into the matter and obtained a court order.
