The National Service Programme, designed for young people to join the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) after graduation, was officially launched on Wednesday.
President Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the programme at a ceremony held in Lhaviyani Atoll Maafilaafushi.
More than 300 participants took part in the launch. In his address, the President said that the initiative marks a significant step towards shaping the country’s future by engaging the youth.
“This initiative will prepare the youth for the future of the country. I extend my welcome to all those who have chosen to be part of it,” he said. The President added that nurturing capable and dedicated youth is more vital to the nation’s development than major infrastructure projects.
He noted that the first phase of the programme would provide essential training and that participants would emerge stronger and better prepared to contribute to national service. “You will become empowered youth who can serve the country more than ever before and carry out your own lives more strongly,” he said.
The President assured participants that the government would support them throughout the process. He said the programme aims to create employment opportunities for graduates who find it difficult to transition into the workforce or further education.
The National Service Programme was first announced by President Muizzu during last year’s Victory Day ceremony. The programme requires participants to undergo military training, after which they may be enlisted as army or police officers. The government estimates that approximately 5,000 officers will be added to the security forces over the next four years.
The state budget for this year has allocated MVR 400 million to implement the programme, with the same amount to be allocated annually in future years.
