1,200 join national service under defence ministry
The programme is being implemented to provide training to individuals who do not meet requirements for academic or vocational entry.
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that 1,244 individuals have been recruited under the National Service Programme introduced earlier this year.
The programme is being implemented to provide training to individuals who do not meet requirements for academic or vocational entry after completing secondary education.
The National Service Programme, initiated under the directive of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, aims to channel participants into selected national service roles. The programme focuses on areas that face labour shortages, with particular emphasis on sectors related to national security and public safety.
Participants selected for the programme include candidates who had previously applied for military or civilian roles through public shortlists and interested individuals from outside the recruitment list. The selection process was conducted in various regions and included assessments to identify eligible candidates.
According to the Ministry of Defence, recruitment for this phase of the programme concluded in May 2025. Among those selected, some will undergo basic physical and tactical training to support public service functions.
The programme currently accepts individuals aged 16 to 28. However, only those between 16 and 18 years of age are exempted from needing formal consent and background verification. Participation is strictly voluntary, and selected individuals are not obliged to join the military following completion of the programme.
The Defence Ministry stated that this initiative provides a structured opportunity for those unable to pursue further education or employment due to various circumstances, including disciplinary records or lack of qualifications. A monthly allowance will be provided during the training period.
