Maldives donates MVR 1 million to Nepal following floods and landslides

President Mohamed Muizzu has decided to donate MVR 1 million on behalf of the Maldives to support relief efforts in Nepal following floods and landslides near the country’s border with Tibet, China.

The President’s Office said on Friday that the contribution would be made to an online relief fund established by the Nepalese government to support rescue, relief and recovery operations.

The floods occurred on 26 August and are believed to have been triggered by the collapse of glacial material into a river, causing a surge of water into surrounding areas.

Floodwaters affected settlements and damaged houses, bridges and other infrastructure.

Reports indicate that more than 1,200 people have died, while about 5,000 remain missing in areas affected by the disaster.

The President’s Office said the MVR 1 million contribution reflects the importance the Maldives places on its relations with countries in the region and its position that countries should support one another during times of crisis.

Muizzu also conveyed condolences on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives to the government and people of Nepal over the loss of life.

Other countries have also provided assistance to Nepal. Bangladesh has contributed USD 1 million to the Nepalese government’s online relief fund.

The Nepalese government is providing medical treatment to people injured in the disaster as well as risk allowances for personnel involved in response efforts.

Authorities have also announced compensation of USD 6,600 for the families of government employees who died while carrying out their duties.

Nepalese military and police personnel, along with rescue teams from China, are conducting operations in areas near the border. Helicopters and ground vehicles are being used to search for missing people, recover bodies and deliver assistance to affected communities.
