Hulhumale fish packing factory completion by mid-2026
The minister stated that the required funds for the project have already been allocated.
Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam announced Tuesday that the construction of a fish packing factory in Hulhumale will commence by mid-year and is expected to be completed by mid-next year.
Responding to a question from Galolhu North MDP MP Mohamed Ibrahim in parliament, the minister stated that the required funds for the project have already been allocated. The project announcement is expected within the next two months, with work set to begin in the middle of the year.
The minister noted that the facility will not be large and is expected to be completed within a year.
The minister also highlighted two concerns raised by fishermen.
The first issue, regarding access to fuel at the subsidised rate, was addressed by the president in July last year.
The second concern is related to market competition, with fishermen believing that if small-scale packers are given the opportunity, they will be able to purchase fish at a higher price than private companies currently offer.
