Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer has stated that several state-owned enterprises have been instructed to suspend new recruitment.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a press conference held at the President’s Office, where the minister was questioned about recent hiring practices.

Zameer said recruitment will be limited to essential roles required for ongoing projects and government operations. He confirmed that directives were issued to some companies to halt recruitment.

“Unless it is for ongoing projects or operational requirements necessary to maintain government functions, we are implementing restrictions. Some companies contacted us regarding recruitment for specific projects, and they were advised to put those plans on hold,” he said.

The minister stated that the decision is in line with instructions issued by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in response to current economic conditions.

He added that heads of state-owned enterprises have been informed that this is not the time to expand staffing.

When asked about the number of employees recruited to government positions this month, Zameer said such figures are not published by the Ministry of Finance and advised that further details be sought from the President’s Office.
