A motion has been submitted to the Finance Committee of Parliament to recommend the removal of Ahmed Imad, Deputy Governor of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

The motion was proposed by ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed from Dhidhoo and supported by Kelaa MP Abdulla Shareef.

In his letter to the committee on Tuesday, Latheef stated that former MMA Governor Ali Hashim was previously removed by Parliament for neglecting responsibilities. He argued that Imad, as Deputy Governor, had been involved in those decisions and should be held accountable.

Following discussions, the committee voted to refer the matter to the full parliament to begin the process of removing Imad from office.

During the committee meeting, Parliament’s Deputy Speaker, Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim stated that the Deputy Governor should work in alignment with the current MMA Governor.

Hulhumale South MP Dr Ahmed Shamheed from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) spoke against the motion, arguing that Imad was being removed for opposing the decision to allocate MVR 14 billion for land acquisition in Hulhumale. He stated that those opposing the decision were being pressured to resign from the MMA board.

Shamheed further stated that no violation had been cited to justify Imad’s removal. He criticised the influence of the ruling party over state institutions.

MDP MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa also spoke against the motion, stating that the government's intention to print more money without reducing spending would negatively impact the economy, increasing commodity prices and affecting the value of the Maldivian Rufiyaa.
