STELCO has inaugurated the Annex-2 power plant in Hulhumale to ensure an uninterrupted power supply during peak consumption periods.
Managing Director Hussain Fahmy officially commissioned the facility by starting a generator at a ceremony held Saturday. Members of Parliament representing Male constituencies attended the event.
STELCO stated that the new power plant will include:
-
A total of 12 generator sets of 1.6 MW each, with seven already installed.
-
Five additional generators to be installed before the end of Ramadan.
-
A total power generation capacity of 19.2 MW once fully operational.
STELCO employees completed the installation within nine days. The work included:
-
Clearing 48,000 square feet of land and removing approximately 200 tons of debris.
-
Land levelling and connecting the new power plant to Annex-1 in Hulhumale.
-
Laying oil pipelines and integrating engine cables into the grid.
General Manager Ahmed Shaaniz, who oversaw the project, stated that employees worked continuously, including during Ramadan, to complete the installation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Fahmy said that the completion of the power plant within a short period was a significant national effort. He highlighted that peak electricity demand is expected to rise following Ramadan and the start of the summer season.
Fahmy also expressed appreciation for President Mohamed Muizzu’s support in the project. He noted that the President closely monitored progress, attended meetings regarding land acquisition for the power plant, and provided guidance to resolve challenges.
