The State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Committee of the Parliament has summoned officials from the Maldives Fund Management Corporation (MFMC) to provide information regarding delays in the implementation of the Hankede Integrated Tourism Project in Addu.

The project, awarded by MFMC to China’s National Electrical Engineering Company, has faced delays despite being officially inaugurated in April 2024.

Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan submitted a letter to Parliament requesting the committee to summon MFMC officials to explain the lack of progress. In his letter, Azaan noted growing public concern in Addu regarding the delay.

According to Azaan, a year has passed since the inauguration ceremony, but no significant development has taken place, apart from the clearing of some trees in the project area. He stated that the public should be informed of the reasons for the delay and requested that MFMC clarify the situation before the committee.

The Hankede Integrated Tourism Project was launched under the previous administration with a loan agreement of USD 142 million (approximately MVR 2.2 billion) from a Chinese financial institution. The project is part of efforts to introduce the integrated tourism concept in southern Maldives.
