The government has proposed Aishath Asna Hamdhy, Managing Director at the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), for the post of Deputy Governor of the central bank.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has formally nominated Asna to the role, which is the second-highest position at the MMA. The nomination has been forwarded to the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee for review prior to a vote in the full chamber.
Asna currently serves as the head of the MMA’s Financial Institution Development Department. She has been employed at the MMA for approximately 15 years.
Her nomination follows the resignation of former Deputy Governor Ahmed Imad. Imad stepped down after the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee began investigating a no-confidence motion filed against him.
Imad’s resignation came in the wake of controversy surrounding a decision by the MMA board to purchase land in Hulhumale for MVR 14 billion for the development of a financial centre. Imad had publicly opposed the decision.
Since the appointment of Ahmed Munawwar as Governor of the MMA in November, department heads within the authority have been elevated to Managing Director roles. Asna’s appointment as Managing Director was also part of the changes implemented following Munawwar’s assumption of office.
