The Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has appointed Mohamed Ishan as head of its Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).

The position became vacant after the dismissal of the previous head, Ismail Sajid, who was found guilty in a sexual harassment case.

Before the appointment, Ishan served as Head of Finance at the MMA.

The central bank confirmed the appointment on Thursday and said the selection followed an internal recruitment process open to MMA employees. The process included interviews with candidates.

Ishan joined the MMA in 2014. During his time at the institution, he served in several roles including Head of Corporate Accounts and Head of Finance.

He is a chartered accountant and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). He is also an affiliate member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives.

Leadership of the FIU has changed several times in recent months.

Sajid was appointed to the role after the removal of Abdulla Ashraf.

Ashraf was dismissed after the leak of an intelligence report from the unit. The report referred to state transactions that allegedly benefited a company linked to Ibrahim Shujau, a Member of Parliament for the Baarah constituency and Senior Deputy Leader of the parliamentary group of the People’s National Congress (PNC).
