The HDh. Hanimaadhoo International Airport development project is expected to be completed by September, according to Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib.
In a post shared on the minister’s official X account on Tuesday, Dr Muththalib provided an update on the project’s progress, including recent photographs of ongoing construction at the site.
The minister stated that 88.7 per cent of the total project work has been completed. The new runway has been finished, while the terminal is 83 per cent complete. Additionally, 96 per cent of work on the air traffic control tower, hangar, and cargo building has been completed.
The development of Hanimaadhoo International Airport is being carried out under a credit line from the Export-Import Bank of India. The project has a total value of USD 136 million (approximately MVR 2 billion).
Key components of the project include:

A 2.46 kilometre runway capable of accommodating Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft

A new terminal building designed to handle 1.3 million passengers annually
The project is part of efforts to expand aviation infrastructure in the northern region of the Maldives.
