President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that individuals travelling abroad for medical treatment under the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) scheme will be eligible to purchase up to USD 2,000 at bank rates starting 1 August. Those seeking treatment abroad at their own expense will be able to access up to USD 1,000 through banks.

The announcement comes amid rising concern from the public over the shortage of United States dollars available at official bank rates. The black market exchange rate has reached MVR 20 per dollar, prompting the government to take measures aimed at improving access to foreign currency.

President Muizzu stated that these measures are intended to facilitate access to dollars for those requiring medical treatment outside the Maldives. The current USD 2,000 allowance available to individuals travelling abroad with assistance under the Aasandha scheme will remain unchanged.

The new provision will come into effect on 1 August 2025.
