A shipment of onions imported by a private company has been cleared and is now available in the Maldivian market amid an ongoing shortage. Despite the arrival, onions are currently being sold at prices exceeding MVR 35 per kilogram.
Traders typically import onions on a weekly basis. However, recent disruptions due to adverse weather conditions affected the availability of shipments, contributing to the shortage.
Ordinarily, onions are sold at MVR 15 per kilogram in supermarkets, with lower prices observed in local markets. The current price increase reflects ongoing supply constraints.
State Trading Organisation (STO) has also confirmed efforts to import a shipment of onions to help stabilise prices. An STO media official told Atoll Times on Wednesday that the shipment will arrive without delay.
