Govt to cancel Maamaduvvari resort pact, hand over island to Hithaadhoo
The contract to develop Maamaduvvari as a resort had been awarded to Coastline Investment.
President Mohamed Muizzu on Thursday announced the termination of the agreement to develop a tourist resort in Maamaduvvari and the decision to hand over the island to B. Hithaadhoo.
The announcement was made during the President’s visit to Hithaadhoo as part of his tour of Baa Atoll.
The contract to develop Maamaduvvari as a resort had been awarded to Coastline Investment. The President said the project had been stalled despite the agreement being in place for some time.
“The Tourism Minister informs me that the works are not going on in accordance with the agreement. The people of Hithaadhoo have been using the island in a productive way,” he said.
He described Maamaduvvari as an island with potential for arts, transportation, and other economic activities. He said the government’s priority is to address the needs of the people.
“Therefore, I decide to terminate the said agreement in accordance with the law and regulations and to hand over Maamaduvvari to Hithaadhoo,” he said.
The Ministry of Tourism and the Attorney General’s Office will work together to formalise the cancellation.
“I hope you will use the island in such a way that the wealth of the people will contribute to the development of Hithaadhoo. I want the wealth of the common people to increase. The whole island will grow,” he said.
The President also urged the people of Hithaadhoo to utilise the island’s resources for the benefit of the entire community.
