The state-owned Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) will begin purchasing fish from the port of Fuvahmulah this month.
MIFCO Managing Director Farhath Shaheer informed the Fuvahmulah Council that the company will commence fish purchases from the harbour within the month and will maintain the operation on a permanent basis thereafter, the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
MIFCO also stated that a fish processing centre in Fuvahmulah will be brought into operation this year, enabling residents to access processed fish locally.
The company has previously announced plans to begin exporting fish directly from Addu next month, rather than transporting it to Huvadhoo.
