State Trading Organisation (STO) has begun selling oranges at MVR 35 per kilogram in an effort to stabilise prices in the local market.
The controlled price applies only at STO People’s Choice outlets, where individual oranges will also be available for about MVR 6 each.
The move follows a steady increase in fruit prices in recent months. According to the Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS), fruit prices rose by 6 per cent in August compared with July, and by 10.2 per cent year-on-year compared with August 2024.
The latest figures also show that overall food prices rose 1.96 per cent in August, while oil and butter prices increased by 5.34 per cent. Vegetable prices, however, fell by 6.32 per cent during the same period.
