Behind every small business in the Maldives is a story of determination.
It is the farmer investing in a better harvest. The fisher is expanding into value-added production. The café owner opens the doors before sunrise. The content creator transforms creativity into a livelihood. The woman entrepreneur is building a business from home while balancing family responsibilities.
These are the entrepreneurs who create jobs, strengthen communities, and contribute to economic growth across the Maldives.
As the world marks MSME Day 2026, SME Digital celebrates the resilience, innovation, and achievements of the thousands of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises that continue to drive economic activity and create opportunities throughout the country.
For many entrepreneurs, the journey begins with a simple idea. Transforming that idea into a successful and sustainable business often requires access to financing, guidance, knowledge, and ongoing support. This is where SME Digital continues to play an important role as a development partner for entrepreneurs across the Maldives.
From Startup to Expansion: A Complete Circle of Support
Over the past year, SME Digital has continued to strengthen and expand its financing portfolio, creating a comprehensive ecosystem of support for businesses at every stage of growth.
Today, entrepreneurs can access a complete circle of financing solutions designed to support their journey from startup to expansion. Through Islamic Micro Financing, aspiring entrepreneurs can take their first steps into business ownership and transform ideas into viable enterprises.
As businesses grow, they can access financing solutions tailored to their evolving needs, including Working Capital Financing, Business Asset Financing, Business Expansion Financing, Women Entrepreneurs Financing, Content Creator Financing, and sector-specific financing for agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and other industries.
This approach ensures that entrepreneurs can continue accessing support as their businesses develop, helping them establish, sustain, diversify, and expand their operations while contributing to local economic development.
Commenting on MSME Day, CEO of SME Digital, Badhurudheen Hassan, stated: "Entrepreneurs are among the most important contributors to economic development in the Maldives. Every business represents an investment in a family, a community, and the future of our economy. On this MSME Day, we congratulate all entrepreneurs across the country for their dedication, resilience, and contribution to nation-building.
At SME Digital, our goal is to ensure that entrepreneurs have access to the financing, guidance, and opportunities they need to succeed. We remain committed to supporting businesses at every stage of growth and bringing our services closer to communities across the Maldives."
Taking Support Closer to Communities
While access to finance remains essential, SME Digital's work extends beyond financing alone.
Over the past several months, the organization has undertaken extensive outreach efforts across the Maldives, engaging directly with entrepreneurs and aspiring business owners through financial literacy programs, information sessions, business consultations, and community engagement activities.
During this period, SME Digital has individually met and consulted more than 1,000 entrepreneurs and prospective business owners, providing guidance on financing opportunities, business development, financial management, and entrepreneurship.
This year, major outreach and engagement programs were conducted in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, Fuvahmulah City, and Addu City, bringing together entrepreneurs, councils, Women's Development Committees, community organizations, and aspiring business owners. These engagements provided direct access to financing information, one-to-one consultations, application support, and practical business development guidance.
As part of this year's MSME Day celebrations, SME Digital also visited K. Huraa to engage directly with entrepreneurs and community members. The initiative provided an opportunity to raise awareness of available financing and business support services while offering personalized guidance to individuals seeking to start, strengthen, or expand their businesses.
Beyond Financing: Building Stronger Businesses
Supporting entrepreneurs requires more than financial assistance. It requires knowledge, confidence, and the ability to make informed business decisions.
Through its ongoing financial literacy initiatives and business advisory activities, SME Digital continues to help entrepreneurs strengthen financial management practices, improve record-keeping, understand financing requirements, and develop sustainable growth strategies.
These efforts are designed to build stronger businesses that are better prepared to overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and the national economy.
SME360: Supporting Every Stage of Business Growth
Earlier this year, SME Digital launched SME360, an initiative designed to provide entrepreneurs with access to finance, business insights, practical tools, and expert guidance.
SME360 reflects the organization's vision of supporting businesses beyond financing by equipping entrepreneurs with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions and navigate the challenges of business ownership.
Through educational content, awareness campaigns, outreach activities, and practical business resources, SME360 continues to provide a roadmap for entrepreneurs seeking to start, grow, and sustain successful businesses.
Making Finance More Accessible Through Innovation
SME Digital has also continued to enhance the customer experience through digital innovation.
In collaboration with Bank of Maldives, the introduced an automated repayment integration that allows customers to make facility repayments directly through their BML accounts. The enhancement simplifies the repayment process, improves convenience, and supports customers in managing their financing facilities more effectively.
By leveraging technology to improve service delivery, SME Digital continues to make financing more accessible, efficient, and customer-friendly.
Looking to the future, SME Digital aims to further strengthen its Shari'ah-compliant financing portfolio, expand outreach and financial literacy initiatives, improve access to business support services, and create new opportunities for entrepreneurs throughout the Maldives.
The success of the Maldivian economy is closely linked to the success of its entrepreneurs. As MSME Day is celebrated around the world, it serves as a reminder that behind every thriving business is an individual willing to take a risk, pursue an idea, and create value for their community.
Supporting those entrepreneurs is not only an investment in businesses. It is an investment in stronger communities, sustainable livelihoods, and a more resilient future for the Maldives.
