STO orders Malé southwest harbour food courts to vacate within 90 days

State Trading Organisation (STO) has instructed operators of food courts at Malé’s southwest harbour to vacate the premises within 90 days to make space for the expansion of the Malé Commercial Harbour.
The 26 food court units were developed by STO at a cost of about MVR 32 million and opened in July 2018. The area has since become a dining venue used by a large number of people.
STO confirmed on Friday that notices had been issued to all operators to vacate the premises as part of plans to develop and expand the commercial harbour.
The company said the decision was made after discussions with all businesses operating at the site and that they had been given a specified period to hand back the premises.
According to notices sent by STO to the operators, they are required to vacate their units and hand them over to the company within 90 days of receiving the notice.
The agreements governing the premises will be terminated once the units are handed back to STO, the notices said.
STO also said that if operators have any outstanding payments for rent or maintenance fees, details of the amounts and a payment schedule will be provided before the end of the 90-day notice period.
The food court area is located at the southwest harbour in Malé, near the commercial harbour.
The decision comes as work proceeds to expand the Malé Commercial Harbour, requiring additional space in the surrounding harbour area.
