The state has recovered MVR 2.4 billion from measures taken against tax evaders last year, according to figures from the state tax authority.
According to the MIRA's annual report released on Friday, 20,295 notices of various types were issued to tax defaulters last year, with 31,577 notices issued to those who failed to file pre-tax returns. They include:

MVR 1.5 billion recovered by issuing notices to 8,924 tax evaders

MVR 864.1 million from 2,493 persons during the dues clearance process

Phone calls to 162 people reminding them to pay MVR 94.4 million

Nine bank accounts frozen and MVR 1.8 million recovered

MVR 1.2 million recovered from 22 persons
The measures were taken against 11,614 persons, raising a total of MVR 2.4 billion, the report said.
MVR 800m recovered via concessions
MIRA is also giving concessions to businesses that have not paid taxes for a long time. According to MIRA, 598 businesses were given tax instalments last year. They include:

The amount of money associated with the concessions is MVR 1.7 billion

MVR 849.2 million recovered from 3,326 tax evaders by giving concessions
In addition, 148 cases of tax evasion were filed in court last year.
Investigative audits found MVR 56 million
MIRA report noted that 21 audits were conducted last year on suspicion of tax payment errors. The audits recovered MVR 56.90 million and found enough evidence to file criminal charges in 10 cases.
In addition, MVR 352.29 million was recovered from 313 audits of 285 taxpayers.
The report also noted that the names of 902 tax evaders were made public last year under the tax evasion rule.
