
VIA new terminal trials underway for launch
MACL reported that resort representatives expressed satisfaction with the guest service procedures at the new terminal.
The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has stated that the new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will address challenges currently faced by tourists.
Trials are being conducted as part of the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) process in preparation for the terminal's opening on the 26th of this month. The trials include the participation of airlines, airport representatives, and travel agents.
In a press release, MACL reported that resort representatives expressed satisfaction with the guest service procedures at the new terminal.
Ali Naseer, airport manager for three resorts operated by Soneva, stated that it currently takes a significant amount of time for tourists to leave the airport after arriving in Maldives. He added that resort representatives also spend a substantial amount of time welcoming tourists. Naseer said the new terminal will reduce these delays.
Larissa, manager at One&Only Reethi Rah, commented that the terminal will streamline the arrival process for tourists and improve the overall guest experience.
Nooh Abdul Haaris, Airports Service Manager at Jumeirah Maldives, said that the terminal will make tourist handling more efficient. He added that the space has been effectively utilised.

The terminal project was awarded to the Saudi Bin Laden Group in May 2016.

The construction is subcontracted to China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

The initial project cost was estimated at USD 350 million (MVR 5.3 billion).

The current estimated cost stands at USD 457 million (MVR 7 billion).

The new terminal is designed to accommodate 7.5 million passengers annually.

It will feature 40 departure gates and 38 immigration counters.

Aero bridges will be installed for passenger boarding and disembarkation.
