Urbanco has decided to allot space to the liveaboard vessels anchored in Hulhumale bay area to the K. Dhiyaneru and Kudagiri lagoons as the Hulhumale bay is being reclaimed to provide land to the people of Male under the government's Binnveriya housing scheme.
The government has decided to reclaim 62.6 hectares of land on the west side of the second phase of Hulhumale.
Urbanco on Thursday ordered all vessels to be removed from the lagoon before dredging begins as it has been used to moor safaris and boats. They were given 10 days.
Urbanco has published and informed some newspapers that it has decided to allot space to vessels removed from Hulhumale bay in K. Dhiyaneru and Kudagiri lagoons.
Urbanco confirmed this to Atoll Times, but gave no further details.
Urbanco officials had informed another newspaper:
-
Liveaboard vessels in Kudagiri and Dhiyaneru lagoon require registration with Urbanco
-
Mooring buoys will be laid in the canal within a week
-
Liveaboard vessels in the two lagoons will have to pay a price as per the rules
Government had originally planned to build an international-class cruise terminal at the Hulhumale Phase II lagoon area. Urbanco had earlier said that major companies with experience had shown interest when they announced that they were looking for contractors to build the terminal.
However, the government has now decided to revise the master plan to coincide with the presidential election. The cruise terminal will be relocated after the dredging of the canal.
