MVR 79.9 million has been allocated from the 2024 state budget for new projects to develop domestic airports in various parts of the country.
In the MVR 49 billion budget sent to parliament on Tuesday, MVR 79 million has been allocated for the construction of new domestic airports in various islands.
Airport development work is already underway in various regions and MVR 8.3 million has been budgeted for the contracted airport projects.
During the presidential election campaign, President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu pledged to build the first airport in Alif Alif Atoll in Mathivareri Finolhu. In addition, Muizzu pledged to build an airport in GDh. Thinadhoo.
Former President Abdulla Yameen had a policy to establish airports in areas within 30 minutes of residential islands. The outgoing government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih maintained that policy.
Under the policy, airports are being built in Sh. Makunudhoo, Sh. Bileiyfahi, B. Thulhaadhoo, F. Magoodgoo and M. Muli.
