Central bank on Tuesday warned against the circulation of counterfeit 100 US dollar notes.

The Monetary Authority of Maldives (MMA) said in a statement that the counterfeit notes were from the series printed between 1996 and 2006.

The most notable features of the notes are:

  • Printed on a paper different from the valid note

  • When the note is exposed to light, the watermark with the photograph of Benjamin Franklin on the left side of the note is different from the valid note

  • The security stripe which says 'USA 100' on the left side of the note is not visible on both sides of the note

  • The security stripe that should be on the note when exposed to ultra violet light is not illuminated on both sides of the note

  • Lack of security fibre that should illuminate red and blue on the face of the note when exposed to ultra violet light

  • The face value included at the bottom left of the note does not change when the note is looked at from sideways

"Therefore, people are requested to exercise caution in accepting USD 100 white border notes and if people find any notes in doubt about the authenticity of the accepted notes, please bring them to this authority for verification," the MMA said.
