No Villa proposal to return Kaadedhdhoo airport, Ameen says
President Muizzu said the government has plans to internationalise Kaadedhdhoo Airport, including a possible connection between Thinadhoo and Kaadedhdhoo.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has stated that Villa Air has not formally submitted any proposal to return GDh. Kaadedhdhoo Airport to the government.
The airport, currently operated by Villa Air, was handed over to the company during the previous administration. A court decision confirmed the transfer. However, criticisms have since emerged regarding the lack of development at the airport and concerns over declining service standards.
Villa Group Chairman Gasim Ibrahim previously said the airport was not generating sufficient revenue and indicated a willingness to return the airport to the government if a suitable arrangement could be made.
During Wednesday's parliament sitting, Thinadhoo North MP Saudullah Hilmy questioned the status of the airport, noting that Villa had previously expressed readiness to return the property without seeking compensation. He questioned the absence of progress on the matter.
In response, Minister Ameen said no official proposal had been submitted by Villa Air. He noted that while there have been mentions on social media, there has been no formal communication on the subject.
“There has been no such offer in an official capacity. I find it difficult to comment on narratives circulated on social media, especially during campaign periods,” Ameen said.
The minister added that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has plans to develop the airport and that discussions with Villa are ongoing to align the property’s development with this vision.
“We are moving forward with the plan to develop the airport in line with the President's vision,” Ameen said.
At a press conference held on Saturday, President Muizzu said the government has plans to internationalise Kaadedhdhoo Airport, including a possible connection between Thinadhoo and Kaadedhdhoo. Further details were not disclosed.
