The Ministry of Construction on Wednesday opened the call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the development of an airport in Mathiveri, an island located in Alif Alif Atoll.
This infrastructure initiative was part of President Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign promise, with the President assuring citizens that an airport would be constructed on the island within this year. The proposed site for the airport involves land reclamation through dredging in the lagoon area.
According to the announcement published in the Government Gazette, the project will be carried out on a cross-subsidy basis—meaning the cost of building the airport is to be covered by allowing additional business developments around the project.
President Muizzu, who visited Mathiveri last year, emphasised the strategic importance of this project.
“From an economic point of view, it is economically viable to build an airport here on this island,” he stated during his visit, responding to concerns about the financial logic of such an investment in the region.
