The Cabinet on Sunday decided to reserve several jobs for Maldivians only and to create special efforts to recruit Maldivians for these jobs.

The President's Office held a press conference on Monday to brief the media regarding Sunday's cabinet decisions.

Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim said one of the nine papers submitted by the ministers to the Cabinet on Sunday was a paper submitted by the Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Ministry to identify the areas of interest and skills of the youth as jobs for the youth.

He said the Higher Education Ministry would release more information on the matter. He also explained some of the areas reserved for the Maldivians.

Among the jobs revealed by Nazim are teachers and nurses which are held by a large number of Indian citizens in the Maldives. In addition, there are the other jobs related to the tourism sector.

He said the jobs include:

  • Guest Relations Officer, Housekeeping Managers, Human Resource Managers, Front Office Managers, Tour Guide, Divers,

  • Inspectors, Surveyors, Site Supervisors

  • Photographers

  • Accountants

  • Pilots

  • Hairdressers, Beauticians

  • Electricians, Electrical Engineers

  • Babysitters

  • Personal Trainers

  • Imams, or leader of prayer delegations

“The Cabinet on Sunday ... decided to draw up a schedule for the preparations to be made to designate these fields as reserved fields for Maldivians only,” Nazim said.

Nazim did not say exactly when the government will stop bringing in foreign workers in these sectors, or when the decision will come into effect.

Every government has made it a priority to increase the number of indigenous teachers working in schools in Maldives. However, the problem is still unresolved and there are a large number of foreign employees among the teachers. When asked by the state media, PSM, whether the issue could be resolved with this government's decision, Nazim said:

  • Finding a solution to this problem is a challenging task; it is important to keep this in mind and set a schedule

  • On Sunday, the Cabinet decided to formulate a table to identify the number of foreign teachers and divide the issue into years according to the plan

  • The Cabinet has not decided to resolve the issue within a specific year

Photography is still a specialty job for Maldivians. A certain percentage of jobs in resorts should also be reserved for Maldivians. However, no government has brought a solution to it yet.
