First phase of Hanimaadhoo airport's new runway operationalised

The development of Hanimadhoo airport is being carried out without disrupting the operations of the airport.

Hanimadhoo International Airport on Sunday began using 1,200 metres of the 2,460-metre runway being developed at the airport.

The runway, which is part of the airport's expansion project funded by a loan from the Exim Bank of India, will be completed by March, the Regional Airports Company said.

Part of the new runway has been opened for flight operations including for night flights.

The development of Hanimadhoo airport is being carried out without disrupting the operations of the airport.

  • The runway is being constructed in three phases, without closing the runway altogether

  • The old runway needs to be demolished to work on the rest of the runway

Hanimaadhoo Airport Project

  • The project was launched in January 2023

  • A 2,460-metre runway and a terminal capable of serving 1.3 million tourists annually will be developed

  • Once the project is completed, Hanimaadhoo airport can cater to Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft
