Ex PG’s decisions unreviewed, open for complaints only

New Prosecutor General (PG) Abbas Shareef said on Tuesday that he will not review any decision of former Prosecutor General (PG) Hussain Shameem but will give an opportunity to appeal against the decisions.

Meeting with reporters for the first time since taking office, Abbas first announced that he had decided to open the door for 20 days from Tuesday to submit complaints about the decisions.

He said he had decided to do so because he had been receiving a lot of complaints since taking office.

Abbas's comments come as the most prominent aspect of the motion to remove Shameem from office is his decision to withdraw after prosecuting some politicians.

Abbas said he would not review any decision of the former prosecutor.

"I have no intention of reviewing the decisions of the former prosecutor. I know that this is why some members of parliament said that the former prosecutor was removed from his post," he said.

"I have no intention of taking specific cases and reviewing them. Instead, I have now opened the opportunity to all. If these cases are included, they will be reviewed and a decision will be taken within the rules of the prosecutor's office.

Abbas said the main reason he did not want to review certain cases was that he did not want to allow the prosecutor to accuse him of targeting a certain person out of justice.

"I will then come to the allegation (accusation), especially if the previous decision is changed, that the prosecutor did it because of personal prejudice against the person," he said.

He said an internal committee of the PG office would be formed to look into complaints filed by various parties regarding previous decisions and decide whether to review the cases. The committee will decide on the complaints after considering them, he said.

"We will explain the decisions and the reasons for them," Abbas said.

Shameems dismissal motion includes:

  • Former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed's rape case filed without proper reason

  • Former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof's MMPRC corruption case filed

  • Prosecutor Shamim decided not to appeal lower court decision in safari rape case

  • Withdrawal of human trafficking charges against former Milandhoo MP Ali Riza in Criminal Court

  • Non-prosecution in corruption case involving ventilators purchased during COVID-19

Shameem has denied all the allegations and questioned the intention of the allegations.
