A Chinese company has been awarded a MVR 91.8 million contract to carry out road tarring and repair works in Hulhumalé, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said on Thursday.

According to HDC, the contract was awarded to Rotime Engineering and Technology Co. Ltd. on 3 January. The project relates to road construction and repairs in Hulhumalé and Uthuru Thilafalhu, following a settlement agreement after a previously planned project was discontinued.

HDC said the earlier project, commissioned by the previous administration, involved the development of temporary work accommodation in Uthuru Thilafalhu. The government later decided to pursue the construction of an international sports stadium instead, leading to a revised agreement.

Under the new arrangement, Rotime Engineering was awarded the Hulhumalé road works project. HDC said the objective is to improve road conditions and ensure smoother transport access.

The scope of work includes:

  • Construction of unbuilt roads in Hulhumalé and repair of damaged roads in Uthuru Thilafalhu

  • Tarring of 19,001 square metres across five roads in Phase I and Phase II of Hulhumalé

  • Repair and re-tarring of 8,012 square metres of damaged road surfaces in Phase I and Phase II of Uthuru Thilafalhu

The total contract value is MVR 91.8 million.

HDC said payment arrangements have been structured to manage cash flow. Under the agreement, 50 percent of the payment will be made within one year, while the remaining 50 percent will be paid over six years beginning in 2027.

The corporation said Rotime Engineering is preparing to mobilise equipment and machinery, with work expected to begin shortly.
