According to the president, the decision aims to save the state budget MVR 5.7 million per month.

President Mohamed Muizzu announced on Tuesday that 228 political employees will be laid off within the next two weeks as part of the government’s fiscal reform measures.

The announcement was made through a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).

According to the president, the decision aims to save the state budget MVR 5.7 million per month. The dismissals will involve employees from various government ministries.

The reductions include:

  • 7 state ministers

  • 43 deputy ministers

  • 109 senior political directors

  • 69 political directors

The announcement comes in response to criticism of the government over the number of political appointees, as the country faces financial challenges. Opposition parties and members of the public have raised concerns about the government's recruitment practices, questioning the transparency around the hiring of political employees.

Earlier, the president addressed these concerns in June, pledging to reduce the number of political appointees. This recent announcement marks the first implementation of that promise.
