Sandbags in Nadella to mitigate flooding amid heavy rain

Gdh. Nadella is bracing flooding as heavy rains have affected parts of the island.

Local authorities, led by the Nadella Council, have taken preventive measures by placing sandbags to protect homes and critical areas from encroaching water.  

Nadella Council Vice-President Faisal Najeeb informed the media Tuesday that six houses have been impacted by the rainfall so far. However, he confirmed that no significant damage has been reported.  

“No water has entred the houses yet, but the water has spread near some homes. The flooding has momentarily stopped, but we are expecting more water waves during tonight’s high tide,” Faisal said.  

According to Faisal, the high tide flooding began Tuesday afternoon.  

“The whole island was flooded from the southern and northern ends to the outskirts. Floods are common during the high tide flood season,” he explained.  

He also recalled that the last severe flood event occurred in 2019, which caused major damage to homes.

“Heavy flooding during this season is a recurring issue, and it can cause serious harm to residential areas if it intensifies,” Faisal added.  

In response to the potential threat, the Emergency Control Team of Fenaka Corporation’s Nadella Branch has taken the lead in placing sandbags around vulnerable areas.  

The National Meteorological Department (MET) issued a weather advisory, warning of ongoing heavy rains in the southern regions of the country until 6am Wednesday.
