Mohamed Yousuf (Kuwa Mohamed Manik or Kuwa Mohodhey), a former prominent businessman, passed away Wednesday at the age of 78.

According to reports, he was undergoing treatment for lung disease at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Yousuf was known as one of the largest shipping businessmen in the Maldives during the 1970s and 1980s. He was recognised for assisting many individuals in accessing healthcare during that period.

He is the father of Higher Education Minister Dr Mariyam Maria and former Customs Commissioner Yousuf Maniu.

President Mohamed Muizzu shared his condolences in a post on X, highlighting Yousuf's contributions to the country. The president noted Yousuf's significant role in the business sector and his charitable donations to individuals and organisations. He described Yousuf as a person known for his friendliness and simplicity.

"I extend my condolences to the family of the late Mohamed Yousuf and grant them patience. I reiterate my prayers that Allah will rest him in paradise. Amen," President Muizzu wrote.

The funeral service will take place at the Islamic Centre after Isha prayers.
