Developed nations should take climate liability, ramp up aid: VP

Vice President Faisal Naseem on Monday called on the international community to increase financial assistance to island nations that are most vulnerable to climate change impacts by taking responsibility for climate change.
The vice president, speaking at a roundtable of world leaders held at COP27 climate conference that began on Monday in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, said:

Small countries like the Maldives have to spend a large part of their budgets on climate change awareness and management

Covid-19 economic crisis forced Maldives to borrow more to raise awareness of climate change, and to manage the impacts

Smaller countries may have a smaller share in climate change contributions, but the very existence of countries such as the Maldives depends on climate change

Called for still more work on the USD 100 billion annual target that countries have agreed to spend on climate change

Called for removing administrative hurdles in seeking financial assistance to combat climate change and reaching an agreement to make the funds readily available in the time of need
"Developed countries have contributed the most to climate change. These countries should fully accept it. The negative impacts of climate change must be dealt with most by developing small islands with the least contribution to it. To mitigate these negative effects, developed countries need to increase their support to smaller island nations," the vice president said.
The vice president, who is accompanied by the environment minister Aiminath Shauna, further called for the full implementation of the Paris Agreement and to increase efforts with perseverance even outside the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). He said all international financial institutions should follow the Paris Agreement in their policies.
