Muththalib cites legal concerns in changes to Gulhifalhu land pacts
The Ministry confirmed that newly issued land registration documents and revised agreements will be processed by appointment starting Monday.
Housing Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that the government revised the Gulhifalhu land allocation agreement due to the inclusion of provisions that were inconsistent with existing laws.
In a post on 'X', Dr Muththalib said that state agreements must be in line with the law and that changes were made to ensure compliance, particularly with Article 11 of the Land Act, which governs the allocation of residential land.
According to Article 11 of the Land Act:
-
Residential land can be allocated only to individuals who do not already own land, part of a private land, or a flat in either a government or private building.
-
A person who has relinquished a previously owned plot or flat is eligible to receive residential land.
-
An individual may not receive more than one residential land plot on the same island.
-
Individuals from islands other than where they hold residential titles may be granted land at a government-determined rental rate.
Following a change to the land use plan in Gulhifalhu, the physical location of the plots was altered. As a result, a new draw was held to reassign plots to eligible recipients.
The Ministry of Housing has also announced that the land titles previously issued under the old agreement have been cancelled. The associated agreements have also been annulled.
