Mohamed Zahid has resigned as President of the Elections Commission of Maldives.
The commission confirmed the resignation to local media on Friday.
EC Vice President Abdul Rahman Salah Rasheed said Zahid submitted his resignation shortly before the announcement. He said no reason had been provided.
Zahid has resigned both as president of the commission and as a member of the body.
Under current law, the President of the Elections Commission is appointed by the President of the Maldives following approval by the People’s Majlis.
Zahid was appointed as a commission member in January last year and became president in February.
Before joining the commission, he served as a member of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.
During his tenure, the commission oversaw the recent local council elections and a national referendum.
The referendum asked voters whether presidential and parliamentary elections should be held at the same time. Official results showed 69 per cent voted against the proposal.
Zahid’s resignation comes as the commission prepares for the by-election in the Hithadhoo North constituency seat of the People’s Majlis, scheduled for next month.
