The Elections Commission (EC) has instructed former President Abdulla Yameen’s party, the PNF, to end its street activities at night, stating that such actions are contributing to public tension and unrest.

The EC has referred to PNF protests linked to a documentary broadcast by Adhadhu newspaper late last month, which made allegations against President Mohamed Muizzu. On several nights, protesters have placed sofas on roads and broadcast the events live.

The EC has sent a letter to Yameen stating that the protests are in breach of social norms and the Code of Conduct under the Political Parties Act.

The letter sets out guidance against certain activities, including:

  • Criticising the private lives of party leaders, members and party workers, contrary to Article 45 of the Political Parties Act Code of Conduct

  • Making statements that create anger and hostility in society, and making untrue or unverified statements

  • Holding public meetings and political party activities in streets and public squares outside limits set by law

The EC stated that it supports political activity carried out within the law and regulations.

The Media Commission has ordered Channel 13 to stop live broadcast of PNF protest footage. In a letter, the commission stated that live broadcasting of the scenes was in breach of the Code of Conduct for broadcasters, media workers and journalists under the Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act.
