Maldives president pledges stronger India cooperation

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to strengthening relations with India, stating that cooperation between the two countries will continue to expand across multiple sectors.

The President conveyed the message in letters sent on Saturday to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of India's 80th Independence Day.

Muizzu also extended Independence Day greetings through a social media post, in which he tagged both Indian leaders and reiterated the Maldives' commitment to maintaining and enhancing bilateral relations.

In a response shared on social media, Prime Minister Modi thanked the President for his message and expressed hope that relations between the two countries would continue to grow.

According to the President's Office, Muizzu's letters conveyed greetings and best wishes on behalf of the government and people of the Maldives to India's leadership, government and people.

In his letter to President Murmu, Muizzu highlighted India's democratic development and socio-economic progress. He also acknowledged India's role in promoting peace, stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

In his message to Prime Minister Modi, the President expressed appreciation for India's continued support towards the Maldives' development and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing cooperation between the two countries.

The President also stated that the Maldives remains committed to further strengthening strategic ties with India across a range of areas.

India is one of the Maldives' closest bilateral partners, with cooperation spanning infrastructure, health, education, defence, trade and development assistance.
