President Mohamed Muizzu announced that a roadmap for future cooperation between the Maldives and India has been established following discussions held during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day state visit.
Prime Minister Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday to mark the 60th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations and the Maldives' 60th Independence Day. The visit includes high-level talks and the signing of several agreements between the two governments.
At a joint press conference held in Malé, President Muizzu stated that discussions with Prime Minister Modi were productive and that the outcomes of the visit would contribute to further strengthening ties between the two countries.
“India has historically maintained close relations with the Maldives,” President Muizzu said. “Following this visit, I believe the relationship will continue to grow stronger.”
According to President Muizzu, India has played a role in several significant developments in the Maldives, and extensive discussions with Prime Minister Modi have resulted in a structured plan for ongoing collaboration.
One of the key outcomes of the visit is a MVR 565 million credit line from India, which will support projects in health, education, defence, housing, and sports sectors.
President Muizzu also noted that the commencement of Free Trade Agreement negotiations with India represents notable progress in economic relations.
He further added that the bridge project supported by India, once completed, would serve as a symbol of the relationship between the two nations.
