The government has established a new company to develop and maintain waqf properties and support religious activities across the Maldives.
Maldives Awqaf Investments Limited was established on Saturday through a presidential decree issued by President Mohamed Muizzu.
According to the President’s Office, the company will develop, renovate and maintain waqf properties in different parts of the country in line with government policy, with the proceeds to be used for religious purposes.
Its responsibilities will also include constructing mosques, renovating and maintaining existing mosques, and providing and developing facilities required by mosques.
The President’s Office said the company will also be permitted to undertake commercial activities allowed under Islamic Sharia.
Until now, the development of waqf properties and maintenance of mosques have been handled by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
The ministry also operates the Islamic Waqf Fund, which has been used for activities related to waqf properties and religious facilities.
