Land handed over for construction of Maldives' largest mosque
The mosque will be built at the junction of Hulhumalé Phase II and Phase III.
The land allocated for the construction of a mosque in Hulhumalé was officially handed over to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs on Wednesday.
The site was transferred by the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) during a signing ceremony attended by officials from both organisations.
The agreement was signed by Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on behalf of the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Ali Zuhair on behalf of HDC.
The mosque will be built at the junction of Hulhumalé Phase II and Phase III. The project is being financed by Al Rajhi Company.
In his Presidential Address at the opening of this year's People's Majlis, Mohamed Muizzu announced that the foundation stone for the mosque would be laid as part of commemorations marking 900 years since the Maldives embraced Islam.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has said preparations are underway to begin construction in September.
The anniversary of the Maldives' conversion to Islam is observed on 2 Rabi' al-Akhir in the Islamic calendar, which falls on 13 September this year.
According to the ministry, the mosque complex will include waqf buildings, commercial facilities and parking areas.
