The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has denied allegations that the government instructed mosques in Malé to stop broadcasting the Adhan through external loudspeakers.
The claims were made by religious scholar Adam Nishan during a gathering outside Masjid al-Furqan on Friday night.
According to Nishan, imams from mosques in the capital had been summoned to the ministry and instructed to ensure that the Adhan could not be heard outside mosque premises.
He also claimed that the Isha prayer call on Saturday night was conducted in a manner that limited its audibility outside the mosque, adding that windows had been closed to prevent sound from carrying beyond the building.
However, Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed rejected the allegations.
In a statement shared on Facebook, Shaheem said reports claiming that the government had ordered mosques to stop broadcasting sound externally were false.
The Minister stated that no such directive had been issued by the government or the ministry.
