The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has begun developing a plan for Eid celebrations to be implemented across the Maldives from next year.

In a message shared with the ministry's media group on Thursday, the ministry said a committee has been established to prepare a framework for annual Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha celebrations in Malé and the atolls.

According to the ministry, the initiative will involve consultations with local councils and Islamic civil society organisations operating across the country.

“Under this plan, consultations will be held with local councils to include the participation of Islamic civil society organisations active in the atolls,” the ministry said.

The ministry added that events will also be organised in cities as part of the initiative, in collaboration with the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.

Officials clarified that the plan is not intended to create regulations governing Eid celebrations. Instead, it is being developed as a framework to coordinate activities carried out by councils, community groups and other organisations during Eid holidays.

The announcement follows public debate surrounding a "Mashi Maali" parade held in Kulhudhuffushi during the recent Eid al-Adha celebrations.

The parade, which traditionally incorporates satire and social commentary, included portrayals related to current political issues. The displays drew criticism from some supporters of the government, who argued that aspects of the event were inconsistent with Islamic values.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs did not directly link the new initiative to the controversy but announced that preparations for the national Eid celebration framework are now underway.

Further details of the plan are expected to be released following consultations with councils and participating organisations.
